Memories
Ogonna Oraedu

I got to know Okey through my younger brother Ike. They were both in a very close group of friends who used to hang out in Oba during holidays. I remember him as a very handsome and ever smiling young man. I have been following his successful career closely. I pray God to give his wife the strength and courage to bring up their young children. I pray for all the loved ones he left behind. Amen.

It was 1990 in New York and Okey had landed from Nigeria with his wife Ngozi. Few months after his arrival he scheduled his wedding in New York. Okey didn't know a lot of people in New York and needed some help. We tried our best for him and his wife. The wedding was a huge success. I was his best man at the wedding and later the god father of his son. We continued to be in touch after he left New York. The last time I heard from Okey was an email he sent to me a couple of weeks before his death. Okey and I go back a long way. The last time I visited Nigeria was in 2005 and I made sure I visited him in his new house in Oba. Basil Monwe, Junior Ezenwa, Obi Aniedu and yours truly spent time with Okey in his house during that visit. It feels like yesterday.

ATTRACTION, that was Okey's nick name back in the days when he was an A-Levcel student at Oko. If I recall correctly, he earned the nick name from his ever present smile. Okey was well loved by his peers and his demise will create a huge void within our circle of friends. Who are we to complain since only God knows why Okey departed from this earth. We'll surely take solace with the fact that he is well taken care of where ever he may be. My prayer is for God to take care of his family and for them to continue the legacy he left behind. Adieu.
